Do you fall into the crafting perfectionism trap? 🧰
|
Morning! Something that I have struggled with for many years (and still do), is the pursuit of "perfection". Whether it is in a craft that I am creating, an SVG I am designing, or even editing a video. I find myself agonising over every single little detail, zooming in on every flaw and spending far more time than I should trying to make 0.01% of an improvement. And most of the time, I then end up not sharing or releasing anything because "it's not good enough" or "I just need to change xyz and then it'll be perfect" Or even worse, I craft something and notice a minuscule flaw and think, "this item is misaligned, so I'm never going to share it because it's not perfect" 😅 Have you noticed yourself doing this? I find myself doing this often, and it is a hard thing to completely get rid of, but there are skills I have been working on to lessen the impact it has on my craft business. I have heard many people talking about experiencing the same things that I have too, which is why I chose this topic for my workshop in the Crafting For Profit Camp that's kicking off next week from 9-11 October. But the worst part about trying to pursue perfection is that there is very often almost no real discernible difference between something I spent 5 hours on, or 15 hours on - mostly because those extra 10 hours were spent hyper-focused on insignificant details. Now, don't get me wrong - there is a real benefit to intentionally spending hours and hours on a project honing your craft and improving your skills. But in almost every single scenario I can think of right now where I can identify the times that I have spent hours aligning pixels, or fretting over the tiniest things - it hasn't come from a place of growth. It has almost always come from a place of anxiety, overwhelm or fear. I've struggled with this for many years, but luckily, in recent years, I have started to learn how to deal with it to lessen the death-grip it has on my life. And spoiler alert - these skills are how I have managed to build my craft business to where it is today, teaching more than 63,000 subscribers on YouTube crafting skills through over 250 videos. Because I learned that Done is better than Perfect. So I am super hopeful that this workshop in the completely free Crafting For Profit Camp (that is far longer than usual) where I cover how to redefine "Perfect" in a way that suits your profit mindset will help you launch something, or create something and share it with the world. I share some practical strategies for you to use to help overcome perfectionsim, and share a bunch of resources that I use almost daily to help me keep focused on the end goal: creating fun things to help me earn a living. So I encourage you to sign up for the Crafting for Profit Camp, because not only am I going to be sharing this story and skills, but you have access to so many Small Business Crafty Geniuses talking about topics specifically designed to help you with your craft business. People who understand what you are going through.
